Three-phase power supply: when you need it and how it is connected

What is a three-phase supply?

An ordinary flat is fed by one phase at 220 V. A three-phase supply brings three phases to the property: 380 V between phases and 220 V between each phase and neutral. The supply carries far more power that way, and the load is spread over three lines.

Who needs a three-phase supply?

A three-phase supply is needed where one phase is no longer enough: a workshop with three-phase motors and machines, a cafe or shop with fridges and ovens, a private house with electric heating, an induction hob, a boiler and air conditioning, and wherever a fast EV charger is planned.

Who connects a three-phase supply?

The supply and the meter are connected by the network company, which in Tbilisi is Telasi: the application goes to it and the capacity is agreed with it. An electrician does not touch the network side. Labex prepares the property side: the incoming cable, the three-phase board, the breakers and the residual current device.

What is done inside the property?

A Labex electrician counts the load first and balances it across the phases: if every heavy appliance lands on one phase the breaker still trips, although the total capacity is enough. Then the three-phase board is built, the protection fitted, the earthing checked and every circuit labelled.
